29 March 2022

Devmark Property Group’s R650 million mixed-use development, De Zwartland Werf, recently broke ground for phase one.

Located on the northern boundary of Malmesbury in the Western Cape, it will be the first mixed-use development and one of the biggest investments made in the entire Swartland area, comprising of a retail centre, hospital, office space, drive thru’s, a showroom, and more.

We are thrilled to finally break ground to start with civil services”, commented Devmark CEO, Hein Ehlers. “Malmesbury fulfils an important urban niche in the Swartland and Western Cape. Its high development potential can be attributed to factors such as its relative accessibility along the N7 road or rail corridor, closeness to Cape Town and diversified economic base, which not only includes agriculture, but also well-developed industrial and commercial sectors”.

Malmesbury is home to a number of large companies, as well as regional offices of provincial and national government departments. De Zwartland Werf will offer Malmesbury and the surrounding towns a much-needed space to shop, eat, work, and play in a beautiful setting,” he added.

Devmark hopes to start on the second phase by September 2022. Once completed, it will offer De Zwartland Market, a convenience retail centre consisting of approximately 65 stores, services, restaurants, and entertainment, De Zwartland Werk, commercial spaces ranging from 40m2 to 1 500mand Samaritan Healthcare, a 102-bed private hospital with the only MRI scanner in the entire Swartland and West Coast area.

A number of national corporate tenants, including Checkers, Clicks and Toyota, have been secured. Retail spend in Malmesbury and the immediate catchment area totals approximately R2.4 billion per annum. De Zwartland Werf, and specifically the retail centre, will create an opportunity for people in Malmesbury and the greater Swartland district to enjoy their shopping in a modern and safe environment.

Malmesbury, with its 36 000 inhabitants, fulfils an important role as the urban centre of the Swartland. We believe De Zwartland Werf offers the three p’s – position, position, position. It is bound to change many lives. We’re building other people’s future today! We’d like to wish our construction team all the best with the months of hard work ahead,” Ehlers concluded.

The development is set to create more than 1 100 jobs over the next year.
